    While the Fisher Mountain claim in Montgomery County is legendary, its history was preserved through a shared family endeavor. On their property in Mount Ida, Irene Stanley curated the original Stanley Mineral Museum, a landmark that housed world-class Arkansas quartz for decades.

    Her meticulous care for the collection ensured these pieces remained a documented record of the 1940s era—a legacy now preserved in the archives of regional institutions like the Heritage House Museum. By highlighting this provenance, Clardy’s continues the tradition of the family-run gallery, bridging the gap between the original Mount Ida curators and our modern digital museum.

    Before it became the world-renowned Ron Coleman Mine, this Garland County site was known as the “Old Blocker Lead.” During the 1940s, its production was industrial, not ornamental; the site produced “oscillator grade” quartz essential for Allied radio communications.

    So critical was this resource that it eventually fell under federal control to support the war effort. Today, these specimens stand as a testament to Arkansas’s vital role in global history—transitioning from a strategic wartime necessity to a centerpiece of natural art.

    Accuracy in crystallography is the signature of the Clardy collection. When Clardy’s Crystals and Cabs acquired the specimens from the historic Stanley Mineral Museum, my father’s friend and fellow geologist Mike Howard provided the technical validation to identify the locality of origin for these specimens, as well as the interesting characteristics of several classic examples of Dauphiné Twinning.

    Unlike simple crystals, these complex structures are defined by the mirrored placement of the small ‘x’ and ‘s’ faces. While the industrial world once prized this “oscillator grade” quartz for its electrical properties, specimens with this specific twinning would have been rejected for the Federal Strategic Reserve (1939–1971) because their internal geometry was “too complex” for wartime radio oscillators. Today, the scientific community views these “rejects” as a masterpiece of natural geometry—a roadmap of the extreme pressure and heat that forged the Ouachita Mountains millions of years ago

    The Great Little Rock Silver Rush of 1982
    In September 1982, an 800-pound boulder of silver-bearing lead ore was unearthed during construction on Fair Park Boulevard. Ben Clardy, a geologist with the Arkansas Geological Commission, recognized its significance and personally ensured its preservation for the state. After lab tests confirmed the high silver content, Ben famously returned to the seller to offer additional payment, upholding his high standard for fair dealing in the mineral world.

    THE 1990s RESCUE MISSION

    During active industrial mining in the Saline County Bauxite District, a vein of high-clarity smoky quartz was exposed within an igneous contact zone. Recognizing that industrial excavation would pulverize the pocket within hours, Clardy and Howard performed an emergency salvage, hand-collecting the specimens from the “completely altered Syenite” clay.

    STEWARDSHIP & DISTRIBUTION

    While many of the original specimens were gifted by Ben Jr. as “Office Touchstones” to visitors of the Arkansas Geological Commission, the find is preserved today through two primary family heirlooms:

    THE SALINE COUNTY SMOKY RESCUE (INTERNAL ARCHIVE: S-SERIES)

    I. THE GEOLOGICAL CONTEXT: THE SYENITE ANOMALY

    While the vast majority of Arkansas Quartz originates from hydrothermal veins within the Pennsylvanian-age sandstones of the Ouachitas, this find represents a radically different geological event.

    This material was recovered from a contact zone within the Cretaceous-age Nepheline Syenite intrusions of the Magnet Cove/Bauxite region (approx. 100 million years ago). The smoky coloration is the direct result of natural irradiation from the surrounding igneous body, which altered the crystal lattice of the silica (\(SiO_{2}\)).

    The host material was described as “completely altered Syenite (now clay)”—a chaotic, weathered environment that made the preservation of large, clear crystals nearly impossible.

    • The Finished Gem: A huge statement pendant(appears to be 40ct+), origionaly worn as a ring(way too big for mom), and then as the pendant form it is now mounted in, at Arkansas Geological Society functions.

    V. CONCLUSION & STEWARDSHIP

    The Saline County Smoky Find stands as a finite historical record. Because the original locality has been lost to decades of industrial excavation and subsequent reclamation, these pieces serve as the primary geological witnesses to a unique Cretaceous event.

    This discovery represents the intersection of professional geology and family legacy—a moment where a “Rescue Mission” by Ben Clardy Jr. and Mike Howard saved a masterpiece from industrial waste. To the Clardy family, this find holds a level of historical and personal significance as important as the original Stanley Museum Acquisition.

    Heading: A Legacy in Stone
    Ola “Sonny” Stanley, 74, of Mount Ida, represents the third generation of a family with a passion for digging crystals. That passion was first begun by his great-grandfather.

    Stanley, who was born Aug. 17, 1930, says he started digging for the treasures as a kid. “I can remember going to the mines when I was just a kid,” Stanley said. “I remember going with my mother and father. Back then, they dug them with a pick and shovel.”

    Heading: The Fisher Mountain Mine
    The family’s mine is located on Fisher Mountain, about 10 miles southeast of Mount Ida. “Most of these pieces come out of the old museum,” Stanley said, referring to his private museum located at his home. Stanley says he has had visitors from all over the world come to see his collection.

    “Most of the people who come here are looking for high-quality crystals,” Stanley said. “They want the clear ones, the ones that are undamaged.”

    Heading: A Lifetime of Curation
    Stanley, who retired from the Container Corp. of America in 1992, says he has spent much of his retirement years digging and cleaning crystals. “It’s a lot of work,” Stanley said. “But it’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing. It’s a part of our family history.”

    When asked what his favorite rock was, Stanley, a native of Montgomery County, replied simply: “Quartz, rightfully so.”
